Apple’s digital car key feature may soon be useful for unlocking more than a few BMW models, with Bloomberg’s Mark Gorman claiming that Hyundai and Genesis cars will support Apple CarKey “by summer.”
It is not certain which models will offer this option, but it is noted that some trim levels of the Ioniq 5 and other Hyundai vehicles include NFC for a digital key.
Although remote locking controls have been available via smartphones for a while, CarKey will treat the phone as a physical key. All you have to do is bring your phone or Apple Watch to the door handle to unlock it, and you can even place your phone in a designated area to start the car.
People who use newer iPhones (such as iPhone 11 and later) can leave their phones in their pockets when they open and start the car.
And if the leak is true, Apple’s move could vastly expand the audience for digital car keys.
